Appeal for funds
Sao Tomé and Principe is one of the poorest countries in the world.
The export of coffee and cacao forms its economic basis. Unfortunately, world market prices have dropped so sharply that Sao Tomé and Principe is dependent on international aid today.
Because of the large oil reserves that are thought to lie off the shores of Sao Tomé and Principe there is an erroneous belief that outside aid is no longer required. However, it will be at least 5-7 years before any income can be derived from those expected reserves.
From the end of 2005 until the beginning of 2006 there was a cholera epidemic that resulted in a large number of deaths and illnesses. Yet, there is still a dearth of the most elementary medical instruments, not to mention hospital beds and medication.
I would like to ask you to please make a donation so that the following instruments may be procured:
and
a surgical microscope
The Health Ministry in Sao Tomé and Principe has informed me that these devices are the ones most needed. On this website I will publish how the funds are used and I will also document both the purchase and transfer of the instruments.
I look forward to receiving any donation, no matter how large or small. You will find the bank details under the menu item "Honorary Consulate".
In addition, anyone wishing to offer any concrete supportive measures in Sao Tomé and Principe may contact the consulate directly.
Support is always welcome.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Michele Sciurba
Honorary Consul of the Democratic Republic of
Sao Tomé and Principe for Rome and the Lazio Region
